Does the Crystal Super work with my Steam library?

Yes. The Crystal Super runs all SteamVR, OpenXR, and OpenVR applications through Pimax Play. Your entire existing Steam VR library is compatible out of the box.

Do I need to buy base stations?

No — inside-out tracking works without any external hardware. A separate Lighthouse faceplate is available if you prefer SteamVR base station tracking precision, but it's entirely optional.

Can I upgrade to a different optical engine later?

Yes. Individual optical engines are available for separate purchase at any time. The Ultrawide engine is approx. $617 AUD and the Micro-OLED engine is approx. $1,080 AUD. No tools required to swap.

What is the difference between the 57 PPD and 50 PPD models?

Both are QLED models at the same price. The 57 PPD model offers higher pixel density for reading fine detail (cockpit gauges, distant text) with a 106° horizontal FOV. The 50 PPD model widens the field of view to 127° — the most popular configuration for sim racing and general immersion. Both are at retina-level clarity.

Is the Crystal Super wireless?

No. The Crystal Super is a PCVR-only headset that requires its 5m fibre optic DisplayPort cable at all times. It does not support wireless streaming or standalone operation.

What happens if I don't pay the Prime fee after my trial?

If the Prime fee isn't paid after the 14-day trial period, the Pimax Play software will stop functioning. You can resume use at any time by completing the one-time Prime fee payment via the Pimax Play app.

Is the Prime fee a subscription?

No — it's a one-time payment. Once paid, the headset and Pimax Play software are permanently yours with no ongoing fees of any kind. The Prime status is tied to the headset's serial number and transfers with the device if you sell it.

Does it work with laptops?

Yes, if your laptop has a direct GPU output via MiniDisplayPort or USB-C that supports DisplayPort 1.4a at 8K/60Hz. Check your laptop's GPU output specifications before purchasing. Verify via the NVIDIA Control Panel — PhysX settings screen.

Which Crystal Super model is right for me?

It depends on what matters most to you. Choose the 57 PPD QLED if you fly detailed aircraft in DCS World or MSFS 2024 and need to read cockpit gauges and distant instruments with maximum sharpness — this is the highest pixel density VR headset in the world. Choose the 50 PPD QLED if you want near-retina clarity with a wider 127° field of view — the most popular all-round configuration, and identically priced to the 57 PPD. Choose the Ultrawide QLED if you sim race and peripheral immersion is your priority — the 140° FOV wraps the world around you more than any other headset available. The Crystal Super is a PCVR headset — it needs a powerful PC with at least an RTX 3080 GPU and a DisplayPort 1.4a output. Beyond that, the complete sim experience depends on your discipline.
